How to reduce stress

You’re not alone, that’s by any stretch of the imagination. To be stressed is to be human. We all get worked up about things but that only shows that we care. However, that feeling of being stressed isn’t welcome during the day. So, we’ve stressed over ways that you can keep as calm and collected as possible.

Turn off your phone

We can already hear many of you groan and say something like “But my phone is what I use to calm me down on a night time, how can that be the cause of my stress?” While, yes, mobile devices do offer a massive sense of escapism from our day-to-day lives, an over dependence on your phone or tablet could leave you with the opposite effect. Especially if you’re cramming all the social media you can fit in your line of vision before you go to bed.

Many of us can get confused over social media; we may use it to learn about what’s going on in the world but, as it turns out, that exercise can turn sour, leading to a fear of missing out that only a WiFi connection can fix. Set yourself your own consumption limits and focus on enjoying your downtime, rather than going on your phone because you might feel you have to.

Early bird catches the worm

Your parents were right when you were younger; an early night does help. In fact, a consistent sleep schedule where you are getting enough sleep could be what’s missing. As we mentioned before, the temptation to spend your evenings on your mobile devices will always be there.

But, by keeping your phone or tablet away from your bed while you’re trying to sleep, you won’t have to worry about checking for the latest updates online. Instead, try and focus on getting some shut-eye.

On your feet

We know it’s a pain sometimes, but exercise isn’t just for the body; it’s for the mind too, and it really can take some of that stress away. According to Harvard Health, exercise reduces your stress hormones and helps produce more endorphins which, in turn, make you feel more relaxed.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to start a gym membership right away. Small periods of concentrated exercise can make a big difference to your stress levels.

Talk

It’s good to get things out in the open. By expressing how you feel to someone, whether it be a family member, a friend or a colleague, you’re making yourself feel better in the process by allowing a second opinion to come into the fold and give you a new perspective.

You don’t even have to mention stress, just being around people can help alleviate some of that internal pressure, taking a break from the potential monotony of modern life.

Your diet matters

It’s easy to get caught up in day-to-day tasks and forget what we’re putting in our bodies. It may not seem like it but our food has a crucial role to play in how we feel mentally. A poor diet that consists of lots of processed foods can lead to increased levels of stress.
